Cherry Hill Board of Education Roles & Responsibilities Overview for Zone PTA 10/10/17

Meet the Board of Education Board Members serve overlapping 3-year terms. As are result, three board members are elected each year. J. Barry Dickinson, PhD , Board President Eric Goodwin, Board Vice President Kathy Judge Carol A. Matlack Lisa Saidel Jane Scarpellino Ruth Schultz Ken Tomlinson, Jr. Edward Wang, PhD

Role of the School Board The school board does not operate the district on a day-to-day basis. That is the job of the superintendent, who is the district’s CEO. The school board sets the policies, goals and objectives for the district and it holds the superintendent responsible for implementing the policies and achieving the goals. The school board has a dual role: To represent the needs of the students and school district to the citizens, taxpayers and parents of the community and To represent the concerns of the citizens, taxpayers and parents to the school administrators.

Role of the School Board -continued The review of written background material, attendance at committee meetings, along with workshops and seminar participation contribute to responsible choices by Board members. The Board recognizes the enormous responsibility they have in setting the course for the school district and strive to make informed decisions

Board Responsibilities - Committees Board members serve on several committees that meet monthly, or as needed, to discuss issues facing the district. Committee meetings are typically held during the first week of the month. Curriculum & Instruction (C&I) – Lisa Saidel, Committee Chair Business & Facilities (B&F) – Eric Goodwin, Committee Chair Human Resources (HR) – Kathy Judge, Committee Chair Policies & Legislation (P&L) – Jane Scarpellino, Committee Chair Strategic Planning – Carol Matlack, Committee Chair Committee meetings, except meetings of the HR committee, are open to the public. The public is encouraged to attend.

Board Responsibilities – Work Sessions The Board conducts Work Sessions on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7pm. The discussion from that month’s committee meetings are shared with the full board. This can include presentations from district administrators and staff members. Board members use this information to weigh the many decisions they make. The public is invited and encouraged to attend Work Sessions.

Board Responsibilities – Action Meetings Regular action meetings of the Board take place on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm. Action meetings are typically the point where matters discussed at previous work sessions are formally voted on or informally resolved. Work Sessions and Regular Action meetings include two opportunities for public input. The first opportunity precedes the Action Agenda and comments made in this session are restricted to Agenda items. Public comments in the second public discussion may be on any topic. By the time the Board has a regular Action meeting where it votes on issues, the Agenda items have been discussed at prior public meetings.

Principal or Supervisor Assistant Superintendent Chain of Command Teacher Principal or Supervisor Director Assistant Superintendent Superintendent Board of Education The board resolves issues only after they have gone through the chain of command.
