Empowering organizations worldwide with collective intelligence Empowering organizations worldwide with collective intelligence. The case of mSpray Erick v. ngwiri Director of client solutions – Ona ICT4d 2017 Hyderabad, India www.ona.io

The problem In 2015, approximately 302,220 children under-five died from malaria. That’s 69% of the worldwide malaria mortality burden (WHO, 2015). From a preventable disease… And this is still just an estimate! An effective way of fighting malaria is through IRS Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is the application of insecticide to the inside of dwellings, on walls and other surfaces that serve as a resting place for malaria- infected mosquitoes. IRS kills mosquitoes when they come in contact with treated surfaces, preventing disease transmission.

Challenges Difficult to accurately measure coverage Success is measured at higher abstraction levels than required – districts not villages Expensive – intervention needs to be specific. Can’t do blanket spraying There is no systematic approach to targeting Real-time data is not used to help manage the process

Innovation = Linking service delivery to physical locations (each with a unique ID)

How this applies to agriculture?

Trace plot and add to OSM. Plot is assigned a unique ID and acreage automatically calculated. Plot #42564

2. Agro dealer visits farm and uses smartphone to register the plot to the farmer. Farmer: Martha Musoga Mobile: 0726 542 5256

Hallo! I’ve planted Maize 3. Farmer sends an SMS to system to notify she has planted this season’s maize crop. Plot #42564 Hallo! I’ve planted Maize

4. Platform automatically recognizes the farmer’s number and updates the plot’s status Farmer: Martha Musoga Mobile: 0726 542 5256 Crop: Maize Planted: April 24th, 2017

5. Ag Extension worker visits farm and takes a picture of plant growth progress with a Facebook messenger bot Plot #42564 Farmer: Martha Musoga Mobile: 0726 542 5256 Crop: Maize Planted: April 24th, 2017

6. Data feeds into a real-time dashboard where crop progress can be tracked and ultimately yields recorded. 6.
