Origins and Function Latin origins Functions as a formal fallacy Latin origins which translate to “it does not follow” In a broad sense, a non sequitur is a logical fallacy, from the Latin word fallacia, meaning "trick.“ In rhetoric, NSs can be observed when a conclusion does not logically follow from the premises of an argument. systematic defect in deductive reasoning; “top down” approach; starts at the top with a very broad spectrum of information and they work their way down to a specific conclusion
Fallacy of the Undistributed Middle TYPE “FORM” EXAMPLE Fallacy of the Undistributed Middle All A is C. B is C. Therefore, B is A. All leaves on trees are green. U.S paper bills are green. Therefore, all U.S paper bills are leaves that grow on trees. Affirming the Consequent If A then B. B. Therefore, A. If it's raining then the streets are wet. The streets are wet. Therefore, it's raining. Denying the Antecedent If A then B. Not A. Therefore, not B. If I have an axe, I am a lumberjack. I don’t have an axe, therefore I am not a lumberjack. Affirming a Disjunct Either A or B. It’s A. Therefore, it is not B. Either it's raining or the sun is shining. It's raining. Therefore, the sun is not shining. Denying a Conjunct Not both A and B. Not B. Therefore, A. John is not both a liberal and pro-life. John is not pro-life. Therefore, John is a liberal.
