Friends of the Earth Case Study

The History of Friends of the Earth Since 1971, Friends of the Earth have been working to find solutions to environmental problems It is the most famous and influential environmental NGO in the UK Friends of the Earth has 1 million supporters across five continents with over 70 national organisations worldwide Friends of the Earth depends on donations from the public for 90% of its income

The issues it deals with Climate Change Recycling Energy efficient homes The countryside Pollution Genetically Modified Food Transport

How it addresses these issues Influencing Governments / Society to take Climate Change seriously Campaigning for laws dealing with recycling Encouraging us to have energy efficient homes Protecting the countryside Persuading big companies to change their practices that were harming the environment Campaigning against Genetically Modified Food Campaigning to reduce pollution through traffic

What can the individual, society and government do? Individual – Campaigning; fundraising; donating; buy local produce; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Society – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; campaign; protest; fundraise Government – Can encourage people to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; can raise awareness about the environment; make laws to improve our environmental practices

Current Campaigns FOE are currently campaigning: for Northern Ireland to have its own Climate Change Laws against illegal landfill sites in Northern Ireland to improve our sewage systems against factories that are polluting Northern Ireland to encourage supermarkets to buy local produce to reduce food miles

The Effectiveness of Friends of the Earth Since 1971, Friends of the Earth has been working to improve our environment They have raised awareness about reducing, reusing and recycling waste They have spoken to politicians to affect change in environment laws They continue to work to protect the earth for future generations
