Classification of the Brown Bear Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species Eukarya Animalia Chordata Mammalia Carnivora Ursidae Ursus arctos

Naming organisms Carolus Linnaeus proposed a naming system for all living organisms Binomial Nomenclature Bi = 2 Nomial = name Nomenclature = choosing of names for things Carolus chose Latin as his naming system because it never changes and is the same throughout the world

Naming organisms We name organisms by the Genus and species names Genus tells us what an organism is: Ursus = bear Species tells us what type of organism: arctos = “the Great and Little Bear” or north

Examples Brown Bear = Ursus arctos Wise Humans = Homo sapiens (Humans wise) Sugar Maple = Acer saccharum (Maple sugar) These also can be abbreviated U. arctos, H. sapiens, A. saccharum
