DVB-T Service Requirements – New Possibilities for DVB-T Portable and hand-held devices with multimedia and interactivity!

DigiTAG Spectrum Matters Workshop Need for DVB-T Service Requirements Planning Conference to Revise Stockholm 61 Service requirements will determine spectrum requirements: number and capacity of multiplexes coverage levels portable or mobile coverage requirements possible need for return channel capacity Service requirements also affect network planning model Requirements will vary from country to country

DigiTAG Task Group on Spectrum Matters – Elements of Service Requirements Type of Service – e.g. TV, Datacasting. Internet Coverage – extent and regionality Capacity – number of multiplexes, or total Mbit/s Quality and Reliability – including % time availability Reception mode – fixed, portable and mobile Receiving equipment – e.g. large plasma displays Interactivity – use and capacity of return channel Implementation options: Transmitter network DVB-T variant Planning model (MFN/SFN)

Questionnaire - Breadth of Response

Questionnaire - Importance of Service Types High importance to traditional TV and widescreen. Less than 10% thought that HDTV important Respondents more committed to IP based services than to Internet TV.

Questionnaire - Importance of Convergence Convergence - the use of multiple technologies to provide a service is seen to be important

Questionnaire - Reception Conditions All respondents assigned some positive need to portable reception

Questionnaire - Interactivity - Return channels for DVB-T Overwhelming conviction that return channel needed - little support for DVB-RCT

Questionnaire - Total Capacity Requirements All responses converted to Mbit/s No distinction between fixed, portable and mobile reception No account taken of coverage target

Questionnaire – Some Conclusions Great importance attached to traditional and widescreen TV (but little to HDTV) All respondents thought that portable reception was of medium or high importance Overwhelming response that return channel important for DVB-T (but not via DVB-RCT) 90% of respondents think that convergence is of high or medium importance Majority of respondents see a need for DVB-T to deliver around 100-150 Mbit/s in their country
