The Metric System of Measurement. *Information The metric system of measurement is based on the number “ten” (10). We, the United States, use the English.

What common object is about this size? 1 cm cubed = 1 mL What common object is about this size? die

Graduated Cylinder Collar should be placed toward the top. This collar will not protect the glass cylinder if it tips.

Be careful with the numbers…they often go in both directions! Beaker Be careful with the numbers…they often go in both directions!

Mass is the amount of “stuff” in something. 1mL has a mass of 1 g Mass is the amount of “stuff” in something. 1 mL of pure water has a mass of one gram (at 4 oC) die

Mass Mass - the amount of matter or “stuff” in an object. Basic unit of mass is the gram (g) One large paperclip has a mass of about 1 gram Measured with a balance (electric or triple beam) (In Physics, mass is usually referred to in kilograms.)

Electronic Scale: Set to Zero Make sure that your units are on grams.

Baseball 145 g Prius 1,325 kg Labrador 34 kg Mass of Earth 5.972 × 10^24 kg

Metric Prefixes kilo k- 1,000 hecto h- 100 deka da- 10 (base) no prefix 1 deci- d- 0.1 centi- c- 0.01 milli m- 0.001

Basic unit Unit x 1000 kilo - Unit ÷ 100 centi - Unit ÷ 1000 milli - Length Meter m kilometer km centimeter cm millimeter mm Volume Liter L kiloliter kL centiliter cL milliliter mL Mass Gram g kilogram kg centigram cg milligram mg

The difference between mass and weight Weight - measure of the force of gravity acting on an object. If you go to the moon where the gravity pulls down six times less than on Earth, your weight would be 1/6, but your mass would be the same. 60 pounds (267 N) 10 pounds (45 N) 27kg 27kg

Advantages of the SI So why don’t we use SI in our everyday life? Universal language for all scientists Easy to use and convert Units relate to each other (m, g, L) Global citizens So why don’t we use SI in our everyday life? Expensive to retool factories, signage, etc. We think in terms that are familiar to us.
