ESR1: PAVEMENT DESIGN FOR COLD RECYCLED MATERIALS Helena I. Lacalle Jiménez 6th October 2015 Ancona, Italy Good morning to everyone, my name is Helena Lacalle and I am the early stage researcher number 1 from the super itn. I am working on a project entitled Pavement design for cold recycled materials and the institutions involved are AECOM where I am based, and the university of nottingham where I will get my PhD.

PAVEMENT DESIGN FOR COLD RECYCLED MATERIALS Background of the problem Sustainability approach Avoid waste generation Reduce raw materials consumption Save energy Recycling Tar So, why this project? Well, there are three main reasons: the first one is that pavements need rehabilitation after being in service, and the problem is that some old layers contain tar. Sustainability: avoid waste generation and raw material consumption. Cold technologies

PAVEMENT DESIGN FOR COLD RECYCLED MATERIALS Project objectives Literature review Cold mixes Design methods Stablish laboratory program Measure key variables Design methodology Stablish: Limitations Specifications Design guide

Literature review conclusions Design guide for airfields Use of foamed bitumen Curing procedure: 20°C 28 days From the lit review, chosen airfields, foam and curing procedure

Research plan New design guide needed Cold mix characterisation* Comparison with hot mix Select design software Reproduce conventional guides Introduce cold mix characteristics Develop design methodology New design guide development * H. Lacalle Jiménez & J. Tuck (2015): Laboratory trials of cold recycled foamed bitumen asphalt: Raf Waddington, The International Journal of Pavement Engineering and Asphalt Technology (PEAT)

Obtain inputs for design software Future work Permanent deformation Fatigue Long term performance Obtain inputs for design software Analyse pavement structure with cold mix characteristics Develop design guide Performance tests Calibrate it

Acknowledgements The research presented in this presentation was carried out as part of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) action, FP7-PEOPLE-2013-ITN. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement number 607524.
