BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE FORD FOUNDATION Created with gifts and bequests by Edsel and Henry Ford, the foundation is an independent, non-profit, non - governmental organization, with its own board, and is entirely separate from the Ford Motor Company. The trustees of the foundation set policy and delegate authority to the president and senior staff for the foundation's grant making and operations. Program officers in the United States, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and Russia explore opportunities to pursue the foundation's goals, formulate strategies and recommend proposals for funding.

IFP Program Overview Basic Premises: New generations of leaders with direct knowledge of their societies’ worst problems and inequities will benefit as individuals from post-graduate study Individuals selected on the basis of their social commitment and leadership potential in addition to their academic achievements will be strongly motivated to use their education for the betterment of their communities Social returns on investment in education are quickly compounded through reinforcing networks that strive for a common purpose, such as social justice

AIMS OF THE PROGRAM AIMS To provide opportunities to unique individuals from communities lacking systematic access to higher education so as to broaden the talent pool of future leaders in developing countries To prepare Fellows to become leaders in the field that further the goals of the Foundation through the knowledge and skills gained from advanced graduate study To encourage Fellows to apply their advanced skills and knowledge in the development and advancement of their own communities and countries AIMS

PROGRAM TARGET The program is aimed at outstanding individuals from groups or communities that historically have lacked opportunities to pursue higher education Particular ethnic, racial or religious groups Women People with disabilities People living outside major cities

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Residents and Resident citizens of participating country( Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal). Holders of Bachelors Degree or its equivalent who have demonstrated academic potential in their studies. Experience in community or development related activities An intention to pursue formal Masters or Doctoral training that will enhance their leadership skills in fields that support the goals of the Ford Foundation. Have a statement of objectives specifying how they intend applying their studies to social issues in their own community/or country.

AAU ensures selection criteria are applied consistently PROGRAM SELECTION PROCESS Applications submitted to Partner Organizations (AAU) and local implementation partners, ( Pathfinder and WARC) AAU in association with Pathfinder & WARC identify and appoint academics and professionals as Short-listing & Selection Committee Members Short-listing Ctee evaluates completed applications and recommends candidates for interview. Selection Committee interviews candidates and makes recommendations. IFP NY reviews and endorses recommendations All short- listed applicants are notified of outcome Successful applicants are assisted with registration process for University of their choice. AAU ensures selection criteria are applied consistently

PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION AND SUPPORT Successful applicants will be able to study for up to 3 years in a relevant degree program at a university anywhere in the world. The Partner Organization & Placement Partners (IIE/BC/NUFFIC) will assist in placement of Fellows-Elect. The program provides financial assistance with travel, living allowances, tuition and other specific related costs. Provision is also made for Pre-Fellowship training in language, computer and research courses. During the Fellowship period, Fellows will receive support to pursue professional activities relevant to their field of study. Fellows will be encouraged to stay up to date in their respective fields through interactive web based communication and other means.
