Background Snohomish, WA, WWU in Bellingham Bridgeport, WA (4 years) Columbia Falls, MT Whitefish, MT (3 years) Columbia Falls, MT (4 years) Flathead, MT (5 years) Glacier, MT (10 years)

Glacier Philosophy Multi-Sport vs. Specialization You need those competitors, whether BB is their priority or not (Pat O’Connell) Toughness/Weight room Physical and Mental Toughness Surround Your Program with Great People Doug Hashley; Don Smith; Andy Fors; JC Isakson; Jason Hall; Ryan Wakefield; Ben Cutler; Art Krueger; Don’t look for “yes” men, demand loyalty Hard Work Expectation of Coaches and Players Playing hard is an expectation: non-negotiable Try-Outs/Cutting/Meetings

Wolfpack 2-3 Zone Defense Why do we run a 2-3? Only so much other teams can do Teams do not prepare as much as man Protect our bigs Easy to run in transition Team “Buy In”—Create an identity

Wolfpack 2-3 Zone Defense 2016-2017 Stats 45 ppg on season (#1 AA) 43.6 ppg in state tourney 5.75 reb diff/game (#1 AA) 27% opponent 3 pt shooting on season 16% in 3 state tourney games Why was our zone successful? Great Personnel Great Rebounding Team Great Communicators Very Active Challenged shots—create tough shots (hands up/rushed) Helped Each Other—Chemistry Great Offensive Efficiency

Wolfpack 2-3 Zone Defense Philosophy Don’t “sit” in a zone/be aggressive Belly-button zones--obsolete Take away 2 HUDL has changed the game Who are the 2 players on the opposing team you want to limit? Know opponent’s favorite sets/tendencies—not all of them! Show action with JV team and have players scheme a defense Anticipate slides/next pass/”air time” Don’t guard “ghosts” Find people to guard in your area. Don’t just stand in your “spot” No penetration: Non-Negotiable No High Post: Non-Negotiable No open shots: “Mismatches don’t beat you, open shots do”. Force low percentage shots (points per possession) Must be able to execute man principles: close outs, stopping dribble penetration, high hands, rebounding, etc Transition from defense to offense Run on Opportunity and on out terms/ No track meets.

Wolfpack 2-3 Zone Defense Basics (non-negotiables) Communicate Hands up and active Move on every pass No straight line drives: “Guard your yard” Closeouts on the wing and corner must be drilled every day Butt to baseline Rebound your position Execute your slides/traps

Wolfpack 2-3 Zone Defense Not carved in stone, we will adjust based on need/skill level Alignment 1 (point) Left top 2 (rt wing) Right top 3 (lt wing) Left Bottom 4 (forward) Right Bottom 5 (post) Middle

Alignment

Transition—Sideline Break

Wolfpack 2-3 Zone Defense Responsibilities Top 2 (x1, x2) have High Post, Point, Wing (w/help from 2 forwards x3 and x4) Forwards (x3, x4) have wing help, corner, high post on short corner trap Post has block coverage, high post help Post is the “Quarterback” of the Defense. He must be a great communicator.

Wolfpack 2-3 Zone Defense Slides: “bumping” We must be able to anticipate our next slide: moving on “air time” (Shell Drill) We must “bump” with speed and purpose: stay out of the “throw up zone” Must teach proper angles—no straight line drives 1st side point to wing, should be no reason to bump if our top is playing correctly We do not ever want to double the perimeter, will double the high/low post or short corner Defending the skip pass must be worked on every day

Bumping

Skip This should be a race to the ball with Guard and forward. Forward, anticipating the pass, should get there 1st. Guard will bump forward down to the block. (Get out of the “throw up zone” Good close-out technique, no straight line drives. “Guard your yard”

Skip

Skip Alternative

High Post Coverage The ball in the High Post is a concern because: Scoring: Great players in the position (Deming, Richmond, O’Reilly—last 3 games) Passing: Every pass out is a short pass to a scoring opportunity. (Inside out 3 highest % 3 point shot.) Puts our big in harm’s way If the ball gets to the High Post: X5 must come and defend—How hard based on scout X1 and X2 must “dig”, but not lose their shooters. They must keep their butts to the baseline and not turn their backs. X3 and X4 have block to corner protection.

High Post Defense

Wolfpack 2-3 Zone Defense We trap the short corner every time. We feel it is one of the most dangerous places against our zone Trap with x5 and forward (x3) Opposite forward must meet high post sliding to rim (x4) Trap side guard takes away reversal (x1) Opposite guard takes 2 (x2) Same as any trap: 2 trappers/goaltender/2 interceptors

Short Corner Trap

Wolfpack 2-3 Zone Defense Trapping Short Corner Baseline Corner (smash) Dribble over ½ court (jump) 1st pass to wing (double) On ball pressure with just one guard: (Hard)

Smash (Deep Corner Trap) Trap with Forward and Guard on Topside

Jump (Trap Dribble at ½ Court)

Double (Trap with Guard and Forward on the Wing)

Defending the High On-Ball Screen

Defending a Dominate Post We will play behind with X5 and put either the guard or forward in the lap of the post. These two must be working in tandem. Offside guard and forward must be willing to extend to help their teammate. Really have to scramble. Force “one more pass”.

Defending the Dominate Post
