Poverty proofing summary

Poverty in the UK Predicted number of children in the UK living in poverty will be 3.4 million in 2020 The number of people accessing food banks increased by 170% in the 12 months to March 2013. 24% children in the North East live in poverty 17.8% in Northumberland (2012) Morpeth Kirkhill 12.62% Morpeth North 12.69% Morpeth Stobhill 23.42% Rothbury 12%.

Children’s North East Charitable organisation that have been going for 125 years Set up a pilot scheme 2 years ago looking into poverty for students in schools The idea is to poverty proof the school day for all students so they all have the same opportunities regardless of their background The audit looked into academic, social and financial aspects of school life Two weeks between ourselves and one of our middle schools Students trained as peer researchers help facilitate the audit Parent questionnaire and opportunity to meet the staff

Focus of the audit Ability groupings / Setting Anti Bullying strategies Extra Curricular Food Homework Parents / Carers Uniform Other

Ability / Sets WWW Access allows pupils to have extra support or time they need. English department has a non-set system which allows for better integration. Areas to Explore Perception that behaviour should be better in Set 1 “This is a set 1 class, you should not be talking” Lower set students described themselves as being “given up on” and the teachers “don’t know how to deal with us”

Bullying WWW Pleasant atmosphere where adults and students are polite to one another Clear anti bullying boards and displays Know they can speak to Mrs Wilson- Head Areas to Explore Certain students are bullied as they are quiet , different or have learning difficulty (teacher agreed) Students feel they can be judged for not having the most up to date clothes and accessories, non-uniform days are very difficult and stressful. Most pupils tend to socialise where they are from - Stobhill, Ashington, Morpeth

ODD ONE OUT

What would our classroom look like without these barriers?
