Intaglio Printing (With Cardboard)

What is it? Intaglio (pronounced in-TAL-ee-oh) is a family of printmaking techniques in which the image is incised into a surface, known as the plate. Normally, copper or zinc plates are used as a surface, and the incisions are created by etching. To print an intaglio plate, ink is applied to the surface and then rubbed with cloth to remove most of the excess. The final smooth wipe is often done with newspaper or old public phone book pages, leaving ink only in the incisions. A damp piece of paper is placed on top and the plate and paper are run through a printing press that, through pressure, transfers the ink from the recesses of the plate to the paper. (The opposite of relief)

Directions: In pencil, create a successful drawing. Make good use of your space. When finished, put several layers of acrylic gloss medium over all of it and let it dry. It will dry clear so you will be able to see your drawing. When it is dry use a scratching tool to scratch clear coat away. The deeper the scratches the more ink that area will hold. Paint ink across it making sure it is pressed into your scratched areas. Don’t be wasteful with the ink, just start with a little and get more as needed. Then take a cloth and wipe the ink away. It should be wiped off the high surfaces and stay in the scratched areas. Place a damp sheet of paper across your cardboard and roll through the press. Be careful of finger prints etc…You will not be able to get more than 2-4 good prints. Eventually the scratched areas will fill up with dried ink. BE CREATIVE! http://youtu.be/SNKn4PORGBI

Student Work The deeper and wider the scratching, the more ink the incisions hold, resulting in darker prints.. See the beautiful textures?! This is what makes these prints unique.
