Quality over Quantity Summer @ OPL Hi my name is Anne Lennon and I work as a programing librarian for the Oakland Public Library and I am here to talk about Oakland’s Summer Reading. November 3, 2016 Reading By Design | Summer 2017

Summer @ Oakland Public Library First I would like to tell you a little about Oakland and the Library. We have a population of a little over 400,000 people. Oakland is an awesome place to live and work. The city that is make up of many different neighborhoods, incomes and is incredbily diverse with more than 125 languages and dialects spoken throughout. Summer @ Oakland Public Library At Oakland we have three different games during the Summer. The Teens have a Summer Passport where teens can explore Oakland, visiting farmers markets, museums and other cultural venues. Summer @ Oakland Public Library What are we talking about when we say “Quality over Quantity” I am going to talk about Oakland’s approach to Summer Reading. We keep statistics and track finishers because this is important information both for our understanding and to share with stakeholders. But as children’s librarians we are not governed statistic we are not expected to meet last years numbers. What is expected is for us to engage Reading By Design | Summer 2017 November 3, 2016

Summer @ Oakland Public Library We want Summer to be a meaningful experience, incentivizing learning, reading and creativity.  Reading is central to our program, but not the only meaningful activity, and there is no value judgement: it’s not better than other activities, it’s just very centrally important to our community right now. Summer @ Oakland Public Library Oakland is a diverse community and there is no one single approach to summer that meets the needs of our patrons. We have attempted to make the program as simple as possible and with a diversity of programming to engage people in ways that have a positive impact on their lives.
