1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

You Were Sanctified! 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Introduction 1. It is important we know what sanctification means. 2. Once we know, we can make application in our lives. 3. The fact that we are sanctified tells us how to live.

Sanctification Defined Sanctification (hagiasmos) - properly purification – holiness. To render or declare sacred or holy, consecrate... (2) to separate from things profane and dedicate to God to consecrate (Thayer) Holy (hagios) - sacred (physically pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially consecrated). Fundamentally signifies separated, and hence, in Scripture in its moral and spiritual significance, separated from sin and therefore consecrated to God (Vines). I. Sanctification Defined Sanctification hagiasmos - properly purification, that is, (the state) purity; concretely (by Hebraism) a purifier: - holiness, sanctification. To render or declare sacred or holy, consecrate... (2) to separate from things profane and dedicate to God to consecrate (Thayer) Holy hagios - sacred (physically pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially consecrated): - (most) holy (one, thing), saint. Fundamentally signifies separated, and hence, in Scripture in its moral and spiritual significance, separated from sin and therefore consecrated to God (Vines).

Sanctification includes A. Sexual Immorality. (1 Thessalonians 4:3-8) 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 (v. 18) – “Flee sexual immorality.” Ephesians 5:3 III. Sanctification includes continual abstinence from… 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 A. Sexual Immorality. (1 Thessalonians 4:3-8)(fornicators, adulterers, homosexuals, sodomites) 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 (body is not for sexual immorality). (v. 18) – “Flee sexual immorality.” Ephesians 5:3 – not to be mentioned as acceptable for saints (those sanctified). (Uncleanness – in a moral sense;: the impurity of lustful, luxurious living.)

Clothing With Sex appeal A dressing room on wheels was considered essential for preparing for a swim at Europe's beaches in the 1890s. Ladies would sew weights into the hems of their garments to prevent them from riding up and showing their legs. The precursor to the modern bikini emerged in 1907, when Australian swimmer and performer Annette Kellerman was arrested on a Boston beach for wearing a formfitting one-piece. On July 5, 1946, French engineer Louis Réard designed a garment "smaller than the world's smallest bathing suit." But at first none of the Parisian models would dare to wear his design. Micheline Bernardini, a nude dancer, was the first woman ever to wear a bikini, during a July 11, 1946, showing for the press at the fashionable Piscine Molitor in Paris. The bikini was so small it could fit into a matchbox.

Sanctification includes Sexual Immorality. (1 Thessalonians 4:3-8) Relationships Song of Solomon 2:4-7;3:1-5 Hebrews 13:4 Relationships (dating/man and woman) Song of Solomon 2:4-7;3:1-5 Hebrews 13:4

Sanctification includes B. Drunkenness. (Proverbs 20:1) 1 Peter 4:3-6 Drunkenness (excess of wine) – oinophlugia - an overflow (or surplus) of wine, that is, vinolency (drunkenness): - excess of wine. Too drunk to function. Revelries (revellings) – kōmos - a carousal (as if a letting loose): - revelling, rioting. Drunk enough to do things you wouldn’t normally do. Drinking parties (banquetings) – potos – a drinking bout (a banquet – dinner or party). Casually consuming alcohol with no intention of drunkenness. B. Drunkenness. (Proverbs 20:1) • 1 Peter 4:3-6 o Drunkenness (excess of wine) – oinophlugia - an overflow (or surplus) of wine, that is, vinolency (drunkenness): - excess of wine.  Too drunk to function. o Revelries (revellings) – kōmos - a carousal (as if a letting loose): - revelling, rioting.  Drunk enough to do things you wouldn’t normally do. o Drinking parties (banquetings) – potos – a drinking bout (a banquet – dinner or party).  Casually consuming alcohol with no intention of drunkenness.

Sanctification is more than That… Matthew 5:17-30 Romans 12:1-2 – Do not be conformed! Entertainment is trying to make you conform to worldliness. 1 Peter 1:13-16 Romans 6:1-14 IV. Sanctification is more than abstaining from the exact physical act of sin… Matthew 5:17-30 • Romans 12:1-2 – Do not be conformed! o Entertainment is trying to conform you to worldliness. • 1 Peter 1:13-16 o God is holy. We are His people. We should therefore be holy! • Romans 6:1-14 o A slave who is freed does not return to the previous owners dwelling to relax. o He gets away from that place.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1. We Christians are sanctified and should live a life according to that sanctification. 2. We are to be like God. “Be holy for I am holy!”
