EXISTENTIALISM A philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of individual experience in a hostile or indifferent universe. It regards human existence as unexplainable and stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for the consequences of one's acts.

The early Soren Kierkegaard is 19th century philosopher regarded as the father of existentialism. maintained that the individual is solely responsible for giving his or her own life meaning and for living that life passionately and sincerely in spite of many existential obstacles and distractions including despair, angst, absurdity, alienation, and boredom.

I stick my finger into existence---It smells of nothing. Where am I I stick my finger into existence---It smells of nothing. Where am I? What is this thing called the world? Who is it who has lured me into the thing, and now leaves me here? How did I come into the world? Why was I not consulted? -Soren Kierkegaard

“ I was walking along a path with two friends — the sun was setting — suddenly the sky turned blood red — I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence — there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city — my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety — and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.” -Edvurd Munch
