Autumn Term 2017 Some of the topics we’ll be covering this term: Science – reversible and irreversible changes/materials Computing – Internet safety, e-mail, logging on and saving files on to the school network RE – How do Hindus show their commitment to God? Is the Christmas story true? Topic - History – Don’t Lose Your Head! – The Tudors – kings and queens, explorers

Autumn Term 2014 PE – Tag rugby and dance – including Tudor dance. PSHCE – New beginnings Art – Hand Holbein focus Music – Learning and performing “Don’t stop believing”

Spelling KS2 focus area – Year 5 and 6 children have been grouped based on their age standardised score, tested at the end of last term. 4 spelling groups 15-20 minutes a day. Aim is to make spelling fun in short, but frequent sessions. Teaching how to think about spelling patterns and rules. Children will have a spelling list to learn independently at home. Spelling test every Friday morning.

PE Days Tuesday and Friday Navy shorts, navy t-shirt, socks and Plimsolls + navy sweatshirt and joggers, trainers for outdoor PE. We will do PE in the cold weather. Please name all items of uniform and PE kit.

Useful equipment to have in school everyday Reading journal/diary PE Kit A bottle of fresh water – it is important to keep hydrated throughout the day and having their water bottle to hand Pencil case containing: pencil, ruler, rubber sharpener, pen license pen, coloured pencil. Please note: the children are responsible for anything they bring into school so nothing too precious; the case must be able to fit in their tray!

Homework We will be continuing with the Learning Log style of homework this year. It will include maths activities where we can link them to the topic work. Prodigy maths – internet based software program, with numeracy topics inside the games. Times tables – the children will be bringing home a times table to learn – we will practise every day and have a times table challenge on a Friday.

Remember: Learning logs don’t have to be a major production every time. As this approach to homework is less structured and rigid, you should not worry about doing it ‘wrong’… It is good to be flexible! Any talk you have with your child about their learning is positive – talking makes things clearer… Please feel free to write in their logs to let us know how the task went or record a conversation you’ve had even if they haven’t produced something to stick in the book.

Expectations INDEPENDENCE Encourage the children to take responsibility for PE kit and homework. Encourage the children to approach us with problems or concerns. Class 5 motto: Have a go at everything.

Expectations Enjoy being at school Always try their hardest Have a sense of pride in their work Take ownership of their learning Show good manners to everyone

Behaviour! Positive Approach Praise and encouragement Outstanding work wall Star of the week Housepoints Star charts Letters home highlighting good work

Sanctions Expect all to follow class charter, Golden Rules and to always be thinking about our Learning Behaviours. Good to be Green system

Supporting your child at home Support Learning Log and practise activities - encourage your child to return their completed tasks on time Use the School website Help them with their reading ( 4 times a week + signature) Help them with learning their tables Encourage neat handwriting Use opportunities for maths in real life – shopping! Encourage to organise themselves

Reading Reading is so important to many other aspects of the children’s learning. It helps with their writing in particular. Reading challenge and reading area in the classroom. Role models – we are all role models – let the children see you enjoy reading – a newspaper, magazine, the internet, a novel. 15

Residential Mid-May we will be going on a residential trip. Will most likely be Weymouth, but not arranged yet.

Any questions? ?
