Does Your Social Media Presence Tell the Story You Think It Does?

What Gets Put Out There…… A recent survey commissioned by Microsoft found that 70 percent of recruiters and hiring managers in the United States have rejected an applicant based on information they found online. What kind of information? "Inappropriate" comments by the candidate; "unsuitable" photos and videos; criticisms of previous employers, co-workers, or clients; and even inappropriate comments by friends and relatives, according to the survey report, titled "Online Reputation in a Connected World.“http://articles.cnn.com/2010-03-29/tech/facebook.job-seekers_1_facebook-hiring-online-reputation?_s=PM:TECH

Social Media…The Good Harris Poll 2011

And Social Media…the Bad Harris Poll 2011

First in His Family to Graduate

At Florida Atlantic University….. Jonatha Carr (24 year old student) began ranting in class over evolution and turned it into a verbal and physical attack screaming about killing her classmates and smacking them. The videos her classmates recorded went viral on YouTube within hours. (March 2012)

It is Not Just Students….. Frank J. Rybicki, assistant professor of mass media at Valdosta State University, shut the laptop of a student who was allegedly web surfing as opposed to taking notes. She filed a complaint (reportedly about a finger or fingers that were hurt when he shut the laptop) and the university's police arrested him on a charge of battery. The Georgia institution suspended his teaching duties there, although not his pay. (Inside Higher Ed April 2011)

Teachers Make Mistakes Too… A Florida high school's "Teacher of the Year" has been suspended for an anti-gay post he wrote on his Facebook page last month. Officials say Buell had over 700 Facebook friends, therefore rendering his comments public. August 19, 2011 (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/19/jerry-buell-florida-high-_n_931941.html)

Employers Pay Attention

How About Some Positives… Kaplan University in Fort Lauderdale uses LinkedIn to support career endeavors for its 53,000+ students & alumni. Sophie Vlessing, the university’s VP-strategic marketing and student experience, said the school has posted webinars & 80 videos from Visionary Voices, a recurring series of discussions with thought leaders. Pace University established a Facebook question and answer interaction board where potential students discuss issues/concerns/questions with students who’ve previously attended the institution. (Leavitt 12/2011)

Using Twitter and FourSquare FourSquare lets students to check in to events like homecoming/graduation GWU is the #1 Tweeting school in the country. Close second? Syracuse When Emerson President Jacqueline Liebergott shared that she had an important announcement, two students started the hashtag #jackiessecret, discussing what the news could be. After she announced her retirement, the hashtag lived on to discuss her replacement. (USAToday 2011)
