A histogram is a special type of bar graph used to display numerical data that has been organized into intervals. The heights of the bars show the number.

Display and analyze data in a histogram. Main Idea/Vocabulary

Construct a Histogram FOOD The list below shows the number of milligrams of caffeine in certain types of tea. Use intervals 1–20, 21–40, 41–60, 61–80, and 81–100 to make a frequency table. Then construct a histogram. Example 1

Construct a Histogram The least value in the data is 0 and the greatest is 8. An interval size of 20 milligrams would yield the frequency table below. Example 1

To construct a histogram follow these steps. Step 1 Draw and label a horizontal and vertical axis. Include a title. Step 2 Show the intervals from the frequency table on the horizontal axis. Step 3 For each interval, draw a bar whose height is given by its frequency. Example 1

Construct a Histogram Answer: Because all of the intervals are equal, all of the bars have the same width. There is no space between bars. Example 1

Cory made a frequency table to show the number of ants he found on his porch each day. Which histogram correctly displays this data. A. B. C. D. Example 1 CYP

Analyze and Interpret Histograms WEATHER How many months had six or more days of rain? Three months had 6 to 7 days of rain and 1 month had 8 to 9 days of rain. Answer: Therefore, 3 + 1 or 4 months had six or more days of rain. Example 2

How many bracelets have five or more beads? A. 4 bracelets B. 5 bracelets C. 8 bracelets D. 17 bracelets Example 2 CYP

Analyze and Interpret Histograms WEATHER What percent of the months had 3 days of rain or less? There were 4 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 1 or 12 months in all. There were 4 + 3 or 7 months that had 3 days of rain or less. Example 3

Analyze and Interpret Histograms Divide 7 by 12. Answer: So, about 58% of the months had 3 days of rain or less. Example 3

What percent of the bracelets had 6 beads or less? Example 3 CYP
