What you are doing today… Examining the inter-relationships and dilemmas between state and national powers ONE video on legalized marijuana in Colorado ONE video on legal brothels in NV

Purposes for experiments and Labs in Science What are the purposes for experiments in laboratories in the science field? How do these experiments help the greater (larger) society? Can anyone think of examples of experiments that have proven helpful for society? What about the opposite?

Federal and State Powers: Structure of Federalism A Visual to Analyze

Case Study # 1: Legalized Marijuana in Colorado In your cohorts (the usual ones so far)… Do the following: After watching the video Highlight the main points Important details What “structural” questions do you have? Hint: Structure means how federalism is working Legal Marijuana in CO The Debrief: Questions to consider for discussion: What purpose would this experiment serve? How could it help solve this issue? How can it hurt the greater population? Can this work within the “structure” of federalism?

Case Study # 2: Legalized prostitution in Nevada In your cohorts (the usual ones so far)… Do the following: After watching the video Highlight the main points Important details What “structural” questions do you have? Hint: Structure means how federalism is working Legal Brothels in NV The Debrief: Questions to consider for discussion: What purpose would this experiment serve? How could it help solve this issue? How can it hurt the greater population? Can this work within the “structure” of federalism?

Taking a Step Back and Looking at Structure…

Federal and State Powers: A Visual to Analyze

Pitting the experiments next to the structure of federalism With your partner, take 2 mins to review your case study conclusions… Now, do these case studies work within the structure of federalism? Specifically, look at the visual for federalism and do the state experiments fit in that context?

Coming to some conclusions… Now, time to ask questions… In your cohort, spend 5 minutes developing some questions that you still have at this point…they can be any questions: Clarifying specifics? Structural questions? Bigger picture questions?

Do these experiments provide the following: 1 Do these experiments provide the following: 1. Provide liberty for individuals? 2. Allow for popular sovereignty? 3. Protect against tyranny of govt? Now…let’s pit the case studies against democratic values, structures, & principles…
