Identifying Variables review!

What are the 3 Kinds of Variables? Independent Variable – something that is changed by the scientist What is tested What is manipulated

Dependent Variable – something that might be affected by the change in the independent variable What is observed What is measured The data collected during the investigation

Controlled Variable – a variable that is not changed Also called constants Allow for a “fair test”

Mini Whiteboard Activity! In groups of 3 or 4, collect a whiteboard and whiteboard marker. You will be given an example to read on the PPT. Identify the variables asked and write it on your whiteboard. When I say, “Time’s up!” raise your whiteboards above your heads. 1 point for each correct answer. Highest scoring group will get signatures for their stamp cards (today or next time Ms. Store sees you!).

Question 1: The temperature of water was measured at different depths of a pond. What is the independent variable?

Question 2: The temperature of water was measured at different depths of a pond. What is the dependent variable?

Question 3: The temperature of water was measured at different depths of a pond. What is a controlled variable?

What are the variables in this investigation? Independent variable – depth of the water Dependent variable – temperature Controlled variable – thermometer used, pond

Question 4: Students of different ages were given the same puzzle to put together. They were timed to see how long it took to finish the puzzle. What is the independent variable?

Question 5: Students of different ages were given the same puzzle to put together. They were timed to see how long it took to finish the puzzle. What is a controlled variable?

What are the variables in this investigation? Independent variable – different ages of students Dependent variable – the time taken to solve the puzzle Controlled variable – the puzzle

Question 6: The higher the temperature of water, the faster an egg will boil. What is the controlled variable?

Question 7: The higher the temperature of water, the faster an egg will boil. What is the independent variable?

What are the variables in this investigation? Independent variable – temperature of water Dependent variable – time to cook Controlled variable – type of egg, size of egg

Question 8: An electromagnet was made from a battery and wrapping wire around a nail. Different sizes of nails were used. The number of paper clips the electromagnet could pick up was measured. What is the dependent variable?

Question 9: An electromagnet was made from a battery and wrapping wire around a nail. Different sizes of nails were used. The number of paper clips the electromagnet could pick up was measured. What is the independent variable?

Question 10: An electromagnet was made from a battery and wrapping wire around a nail. Different sizes of nails were used. The number of paper clips the electromagnet could pick up was measured. What is a controlled variable?

What are the variables in this investigation? Independent variable – sizes of nails Dependent variable – number of paperclips picked up Controlled variable – battery, wire, type of nail

Last Question: Draw your x-axis and y-axis Last Question: Draw your x-axis and y-axis. Label where you should put the independent and dependent variables.
