Basics: 5 W’s Who? ~Nathaniel Bacon was a 29 year old planter from Virginia. What? ~Rebellion against Gov. William Berkeley. Where? ~ The rebellion took place in Virginia. When? ~The rebellion took place in 1667. And everyone’s favorite question- WHY? Bacon’s Rebellion took place because Nathaniel Bacon and many other people were unhappy with the work of the Virginia governor William Berkeley. There was a disagreement about Indian policy.

Nathaniel Bacon Nathaniel Bacon was born on January 15th, 1647 in Suffolk, England. His parents, Thomas and Elizabeth, were wealthy merchants. The year that he traveled to America is uncertain, but his father gave him ~ £1800 to sail to Virginia. Bacon Bacon received his education at Cambridge University, and also studied law at Gray’s Inn. He married Elizabeth Duke, the daughter of Sir Edward Duke. He did not have permission.

-William Berkeley was born in 1605 on Hanworth Manor in England -William Berkeley was born in 1605 on Hanworth Manor in England. His parents were Sir Maurice and Elizabeth Berkeley. They both had stocks in the Virginia Company of London. - He entered Oxford at the age of 18. He studied at Queen’s College, but transferred to St. Edmund Hall. William Berkeley -He was a soldier in First and Second Bishop’s Wars, so he became a knight. -He was appointed by Charles II in 1642 to be governor of Virginia. In office 1642-1652, 1660-1677 After Bacon’s Rebellion, King Charles II became angry, so he called Berkeley back to England.

THE REBELLION Bacon led 500 armed men into Jamestown after accepting command of illegal Indian fighters. Bacon and Berkeley fought over who would control Virginia. The rebellion was the first in which “discontented frontiersman” had also participated.* 23 people were hanged as a result *A similar uprising took place in Maryland later that year.

Outcome of the Rebellion Berkeley “won” the rebellion after Bacon died. John Ingram took over the rebellion, however, many people gave up and “drifted away”.

Fate of the Men Nathaniel Bacon William Berkeley Bacon died of dysentery on October 26th, 1676 at age 29 in Virginia. The rebellion soon faded away after his death. Berkeley died on July 9th, 1677 at age 71-72 in London. After the rebellion, an angry King Charles II had called him back to England.
