Unit 1 - Day 1 Roots of Conflict

Theme: Conflict - to come into collision or disagreement; at opposition; to fight or contend; do battle What do you know about the establishment of the New World? What countries developed the New World? What are some roles the English played in the development of the New World?

Within the 13 Colonies you had 2 groups of ppl… Loyalists ppl who were loyal to the British crown in England who lived in the 13 colonies Patriots ppl ready to establish their own new country w/i the 13 colonies What type of person are you? Do you support change or do you like the status quo?

List conflicts that occurred b/t the Loyalists and Patriots w/i the 13 colonies. One issue that occurred was known as the Proclamation of 1763 - Colonists were not permitted to go West of the Appalachian Mountains. Why would the King of England establish this proclamation against the colonists?

Eventually the Enlish King began taxing the colonists. What are reasons why the King eventually taxed the colonists? - Soon after incidents such as the Boston Massacre occurred. - British soldiers stayed behind after the French & Indian War; Jobs became scarce, tensions rose; March 5, 1770- fight broke out & shots were fired by the British; 5 ppl were killed. Was this really a massacre? Why or why not? What would this major incident eventually lead to?

England began passing a number of laws that were greatly hurting the colonial economy. Who would these laws affect directly w/i the colonies? Who would these laws eventually hurt in the long run? For a small period of time England practiced salutary neglect—the policy of relaxing the enforcement of regulations in return for continued economic loyalty. What were the Patriots reactions to the new practices?

Colonist’s reactions to the British Albany Plan of Union: 1754 - Ben Franklin’s call for a joint council to defend the colonists’ rights but was rejected Link (password at home for link = wiseowl17) Stamp Act Congress: 1765 - “No taxation without representation!”; Able to get Stamp Act repealed Sons of Liberty: 1765 - Founded by Sam Adams; Resistance group the harassed customs workers, stamp agents, & governors; Responsible for the Boston Tea Party Boston Tea Party: 1773 - Occurred in response to the Tea Act - Colonists (Sons of Liberty) dressed up like Native Americans and dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor. Committees of Correspondence: 1773 - Groups set up by American colonists to exchange information about British threats to their liberties
