Today we will acquire and use academic vocabulary Objective Rationale Today we will acquire and use academic vocabulary Vocabulary is the foundation of comprehension. Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression. (7.SL.6) Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. (7.W.10)

Mortal (noun/adj) A human being, especially as contrasted with a god Achilles, a hero in Greek mythology, had a goddess for a mother and a mortal for a father. Of or relating to human beings Because Achilles was mortal, he accepted the fact that one day he would die. Causing death; fatal India’s Prime Minister Indrira Gandhi received a mortal wound delivered by an assassin in 1984. Very severe My friend wouldn’t go into the reptile house because he has a mortal fear of snakes.

Muse (verb/noun) Verb Noun the power regarded as inspiring a poet, artist, thinker, or the like. To think about in a quiet, careful way Great artists will muse over their masterpieces for long periods of time. Many wonder who Leonardo da Vinci’s muse was for the famous painting of Mona Lisa. Synonyms: ponder, ruminate Synonyms: inspiration

Pioneer noun/verb Noun –A person who goes before others and opens the way for them to follow Lucretia Mott was a pioneer in the women’s rights movement. Verb To open the way for others Isadora Duncan pioneered modern dance.

Plague noun/verb Noun -A deadly disease that spreads rapidly from person to person The Bubonic Plague killed many members of Shakespeare’s family including three sisters and a brother. Verb –pester or harass; irritate, nag A fear of the “black death” plagued Shakespeare his entire life.

Subside (verb) To sink to a lower level The flood waters from Hurricane Harvey will take more than a month to subside. To become quieter or less active Gradually, the baby’s crying subsided.

Unwitting (adj) Not done on purpose; unintended The Dead Sea Scrolls were an unwitting discovery made by some Bedouin goat and sheepherders while looking for a lost goat.

Wrath (noun) Forceful anger; fury No one wants to deal with Bruce Banner’s wrath.

Think about it…. What kind of wound might be “mortal”? Do you have a muse? What do you think of when you think of “pioneers”? What might plague you? What can cause a plague? What sorts of events subside? Have you ever made an unwitting insult? Whose wrath are you most afraid of?
