Polyatomic Ions You will learn the names for common polyatomic ions and how to use them in naming and writing compounds.

Polyatomic Ions Polyatomic Ions - charged particles composed of several atoms bonded together. Polyatomic ions containing oxygen are called oxyanions. There are several series of polyatomic ions where there are different numbers of oxygen atoms. You will learn the names for common polyatomic ions and how to use them in naming and writing compounds.

Compounds with polyatomic ions Compounds with polyatomic ions are NOT binary (this should be your hint!) We needed to memorize polyatomic ions because we cannot get their names or formulas from the periodic table! Remember polyatomic ions are a group of many atoms and CANNOT be broken up. You will learn the names for common polyatomic ions and how to use them in naming and writing compounds.

H2PO4 - dihydrogen phosphate You will learn the names for common polyatomic ions and how to use them in naming and writing compounds.

Helpful Way to remember the polyatomic ions Nick the camel ate a clam supper in Phoenix with Crista # of consonants = # of oxygen atoms # of vowels = charge Nick – nitrate – NO31- camel– carbonate – CO32- ate – to help you remember your –ate endings clam – chlorate – ClO31- supper – sulfate – SO42- Phoenix – phosphate – PO43- Crista – chromate – CrO42- -ite polyatomic ion endings are one less oxygen You will learn the names for common polyatomic ions and how to use them in naming and writing compounds.
