Most excursions are survivable, and only a small % are fatal. However, the overall numbers are so large that even that small % adds up to a lot of fatalities. Accident data alone does not fully inform the discussion.

New, Derivative and Production Aircraft Retrofit Aircraft Our approach to equipage is different for new airplanes then it is for retrofit. On new airplanes we are balancing cost versus customer requirements and preferred solutions. In retrofit we concerned about fleet penetration. In order to make an impact the feature has to be install on the airplane. This can result in solutions that may not be as elegant. 5

Runway Disagree Alerting International Coordinating Council of Aerospace Industries Associations Available Equipage AMM on Nav Display Situational Awareness AMM on Class 3 EFB Position Awareness (incursion/confusion) In order to mitigate the risk we have developed a spectrum of solutions. VSD, HUD, RNP IAN are solutions that help the crew manage their energy during descent and fly very precisely during approach in order to reduce the risk of excursions. Runway Incursion risk is reduced by know where you are on the airport surface. This is accomplished via an Airport Moving Map on either the Nav Display or an Electronic Flight Bag. RAAS (Runway Alerting Advisory System) is a feature in the Ground Proximity Warning System that also informs the crew of where they are on the airport surface. Future Equipage Studies Situational Awareness Surface CDTI Position, Taxi Route, & Traffic Awareness, Traffic Alerting Taxi Route Class 2 EFB with AMM – Window Sill Runway Status Indications In the future we are planning on adding additional features to augment our current equipage offerings. Specifically we will add information about other surface traffic to continue to reduce risk of incursion. We will add alerting of traffic conflict. In addition we are working with Honeywell to add additional features to the Ground Proximity System to alert the crew to a unstable approach or the fact they are landing long.
