https://library.concordia.ca/ The Discovery Search, searches the library catalogue AND some of the journal article databases. It is a good place to search for journal article titles. The library catalogue searches all the print books and ebooks available at the libraries.

COLOMBO – Interlibrary Loans Use Interlibrary loans/COLOMBO – to request books and access articles from other libraries via Concordia Request a book from another university library and it will be delivered to Concordia for your use (for 2 weeks) Request an article from another university library and (generally) a PDF copy will be delivered to your email within a week Use the ‘Create Request’ option on the left hand menu in COLOMBO to request articles

BCI Card – Borrow from other Libraries Use a BCI card – to borrow books You can use the BCI card to visit a different university library in person: McGill, UdeM, UQAM, etc. To receive a card, take your student card to the circulation/Loans desk at Webster or Vanier libraries and ask for a BCI card. Why wouldn’t Concordia have the book? Different programs/areas of expertise/languages

Search tips – Library Catalogue and Databases AND –limits how many results your search produces Examples: power AND organizations changement organisationnel AND développement OR –increases the number of results your search produces. You add synonyms or alternative words with OR development OR change conflit OR désaccord

Search tips – Library Catalogue and Databases “ ” – quotation marks around two or more words, is a Phrase search and it limits how many results your search produces Examples: “community economic development” “développement économique communautaire” *- the star, after the root word, fills in all the suffix/compound wards and increases the number of results your search produces Example: econom* FINDS economy, economic, economics, economies

Avoid Searching with Linking words Effects Impact Consequences Influence Results Importance Significance Each author may use different linking words when discussing similar topics. You don’t want your search to be limited to those books and articles that only contain the word “effect” or “consequence”

Searching for Books in the Library Catalogue

Does the book include a bibliography or reference list and citations? Scholarly Books Who published the book? A university press? An institution? A government? Does the book include a bibliography or reference list and citations?

Scholarly Books Are you able to find information about the authors, editors and contributors to the book? Are they affiliated with universities, colleges, research centers, governments or other institutions?

Searching for journal articles in the Databases If you check off the box beside any of these terms, it adds them to your search with AND

Accessing journal articles Use Find it @ Concordia, to access the article from another Concordia Database If there is a PDF, download it

Accessing journal articles – Find it @ Concordia Clicking on any links under the green banner should take you directly to the article 1 If there are no direct links, try searching for the journal in the library catalogue 2 If we don’t have the journal, you can use the Interlibrary loans link to request it from another library 3

Author is affiliated with a University Selecting Articles Length of the article Author is affiliated with a University

Selecting articles What do I need to consider in selecting an article? Look at the title and abstract, does it match your topic? What are the article’s subjects? Do they match your keywords? When was the article published? Length: scholarly research articles are usually between 10-25 pages
