Nodules are palpable, solid, round, or ellipsoidal lesions Nodules are palpable, solid, round, or ellipsoidal lesions. Depth of involvement or substantive palpability, rather than diameter, differentiates a nodule from a papule. A. Nodules may extend into the dermis or subcutaneous tissue (a) or be located in the epidermis (b). B. A well-defined, firm nodule with a smooth and glistening surface through which telangiectasia (dilated capillaries) can be seen; there is central crusting indicating tissue breakdown and thus incipient ulceration (nodular basal cell carcinoma). C. Multiple nodules of varying size can be seen (melanoma metastases). (Reprinted with permission from Stewart MI, Bernhard JD, Cropley TG, Fitzpatrick TB.
