One Giant Leap for Mankind The Space Race: One Giant Leap for Mankind
“Mystery creates wonder, and wonder is the basis of man’s desire to understand.” - Neil Armstrong
Earthly Origins Following the defeat of the Axis powers at the end of the Second World War, the United States and the Soviet Union (USSR) were left as the world’s two undisputed superpowers. The relationship between these two ideological rivals would quickly deteriorate. By the 1950s, many of the world’s countries fell under either American or Russian influence. This state of affairs would persist for over four decades, and is generally referred to as the Cold War.
Impetus of the Cold War “I have learned to use the word ‘impossible’ with the greatest caution.” “I have become death, the destroyer of worlds.” - Wernher von Braun - Robert Oppenheimer
A Bipolar World For the duration of the Cold War, the capitalist powers were headed by the USA, and the communist states were headed by the USSR.
Was the Cold War Really Cold? During this period of time many proxy wars were fought around the world. These ‘hot wars’ usually took place in poorer nations that were dependent on the superpowers for military aid and financial assistance.
The Space Race During the 1950s and 60s, the USA and USSR competed with each other not only militarily, but also in the fields of science and technology. The most famous of these contests was dubbed the Space Race.
Hard Power Versus Soft Power By competing in the Space Race, the two rivals could continue to invest in technologies that would improve their military, or hard power. Yet, by achieving victories in space, the USA and USSR could also use the Space Race to project soft power around the world.
What Would the Future Hold?
Questions to Think About What are some factors that led to the deterioration of the relationship between the United States and the USSR after WWII? What was the relationship of the superpowers like during the war? What are some other factors that might have helped to trigger the Space Race?
Space Race Activity Now you will work together in groups to complete twin timelines of both the Space Race and the Cold War by looking through old newspaper clippings from the period. May the force be with you!
