Spring 2016 Tom Miller Fred Hayes Pharisees Among Us (and we are they) http://phariseelikeme.weebly.com/
Purpose of Study Recovery Model (AA as a model)
12 Steps for Recovering Pharisee 1. We admit that our single most unmitigated pleasure is to judge other people. 2. Have come to believe that our means of obtaining greatness is to make everyone lower than ourselves in our own mind. 3. Realize that we detest mercy being given to those who, unlike us, haven't worked for it and don't deserve it. 4. Have decided that we don't want to get what we deserve after all, and we don't want anyone else to either. 5. Will cease all attempts to apply teaching and rebuke to anyone but ourselves. 6. Are ready to have God remove all these defects of attitude and character.
12 Steps (Continued) 7. Embrace the belief that we are, and will always be, experts at sinning. 8. Are looking closely at the lives of famous men and women of the Bible who turned out to be ordinary sinners like us. 9. Are seeking through prayer and meditation to make a conscious effort to consider other better than ourselves. 10. Embrace the state of astonishment as a permanent and glorious reality. 11. Choose to rid ourselves of any attitude that is not bathed in gratitude. 12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we will try to carry this message to others who think that Christians are better than everyone else.
Today’s Lesson Step 1 Activity Difference between judging and being judgmental

Today’s Lesson Step 1 Activity Difference between judging and being judgmental John 7:23"If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath? 24"Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”
Today’s Lesson Step 1 Activity Activity 2 Difference between judging and being judgmental John 7:23"If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath? 24"Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” Activity 2 Talk of a time when you have been judgmental When does our judgment become contrary to God’s commands?
Consider Judgment Sermon on the Mount 5:21“You have heard that it was said to our ancestors Do not murder and whoever murders will be subject to judgment22But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. 27“You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery28But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. What is Jesus saying to the people?
Remember 1st Step Admit that we take pleasure in judging other people.
Who will be the first to judge?
Admit it! Just admit7 I like to judge just..6 I did not want to…..4 I did not believe that…5 Those little jokes….3 Who is the ultimate judge…..1 I clean the outside of the cup….2 Just admit7 Jesus our Lord and Savior. before I clean the inside. were not meant to be judgmental. think it was belittling. it was makes me feel better. open up the newspaper an let the judging begin. my own guilt.
MY WANTS
Mercy, Judgment, Faithfulness Not sure if they get mercy. They deserve what they got! If they just had a little more faith. I am a nice guy did not mean to do that, I deserve some mercy, right? No one saw me so all is okay! They are worse sinners than I.
Mercy, Justice, Faithfulness Jesus was meticulous in describing that the 3 seeds were to be tithed also. Such as the more important matters of the heart with Mercy, Justice, Faithfulness. What about judging others……. Shouldn’t we?
Mercy
Where sin abound, grace does also. We are all guilty we can all have mercy! Luke 17:32, Remember Lot‘s wife. However “I still err by choosing mercy for me on because I am such a nice guy, and justice for everyone else. I like the idea of God having mercy on me because I am such a nice guy. I deserve mercy. But all those other scoundrels out there….it is justice for them.” The Pharisees wanted it both ways.
“If you want to judge get ready to face the judge!” Wheel chair in Austin “If you want to judge get ready to face the judge!”
Faithfulness Hi I’m Tom------ Faithfulness –”the one ongoing quality God asks of us.” God asks for perfection that I can not achieve. I have to have mercy and grace. It is the demand for perfection that keeps me coming back for more mercy. “Faithfulness allows for failure. Perfection does not.”
Have friends who remind each other of his grace every day! Burn into being! Have friends who remind each other of his grace every day!
