Geography and Administrative Division of the USA Lecture 1.

General information Location – Northern hemisphere, North America Total area - 9,522,055 km2 Boarders with Canada, Mexico, Russia, Cuba and the Bahamas bounded by the Pacific Ocean on the west, the Atlantic Ocean on the east, and the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast.

General information Alaska borders the Pacific Ocean to the south, the Bering Strait to the west, and the Arctic Ocean to the north. The Hawaii lies far to the southwest of the mainland in the Pacific Ocean. Population – 310 mln people. Capital- Washington DC. The most widely used language is English.

The 50 states are divided into distinct sections: - the “continental United States”, also known as “the Lower 48”, the contiguous United States - Alaska is physically connected only to Canada - the archipelago of Hawaii in the central Pacific Ocean.

Washington, DC the Founding Fathers: the capital should be neutral, not giving favor to any existing state the District of Columbia was created in 1800 to serve as the seat of the national government.
