Chemistry: The study of how matter behaves and changes What is matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume).
Physical Properties: characteristics that can be observed or measured to help identify the substance. Examples: solubility -ability to dissolve in water malleability -can be bent, extended or shaped ductility -metals drawn out or hammered into thin wire or strips density, boiling point melting point color texture shape size
DENSITY: the amount of mass in a substance in a specific volume (space). Formula for density: D = M V *Density does NOT depend on size or quantity of the substance! ex: 2 different sized wood pieces would have the same density!
MASS: the amount of matter (stuff) within a substance or object. *We typically use a balance scale and measure in milligrams or grams to determine MASS.
VOLUME: the amount of space taken up by a substance or object, regardless of its shape. *We typically use a graduated cylinder and measure in mL or L to determine volume.(or the displacement method for irregular objects.)
VOLUME OF A REGULAR OBJECT, like a rectangular cube: L x W x H ex.: 5cm x 5cm x cm = 125 cm3
Law of Conservation of Matter: All atoms that go into a reaction must come out of the reaction because MATTER CANNOT BE CREATED OR DESTROYED! Atom count at END of reaction should match atom count at the BEGINNING!
PARTS OF A CHEMICAL REACTION: REACTANTS: starting substances PRODUCTS: ending substances
