The Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS), aims to provide an internet based portal and repository of fire information aimed at enabling a comprehensive view and evaluation of fire regimes and fire effects in support of policy making Figure 1: GWIS interface, allowing users to zoom in and out, select background layers, and overlay fire information layers. Only a limited set of fire thematic data are currently available. GWIS hosted by the European Commission JRC, developed under 2015-16 GEO Work Program Potential Contributions of Regional Fire Information Systems to GWIS discussed

RN Opportunities

The Fire Implementation team works with the GOFC-GOLD Regional Networks to bring together fire data providers and fire data users to exchange information on capabilities and needs. The networks allow for lateral exchange of information and provide a means for strengthening regional and in particular national related fire activities.

Fire IT priorities relevant to RN opportunities Need a more active Fire IT agenda Elevating importance of fire to the space agencies Defining the optimal fire monitoring system of systems (feeding into GEO) Product characterization, requirements and accuracy (GCOS ECV) Guiding the community on fire product capabilities and outreach Known product capabilities, limitations, example case studies through websites Best practices: e.g. fire validation, REDD+Fire Community briefings on current status of systems and products Strengthening use of the EO data at the Regional/National Level Some relevant upcoming issues small fire mapping and characterization agricultural fire mapping and characterization robust product validation (given proliferation of products / post-truth era / policy relevance) Help strengthen Regional Networks RN leads attend fire IT but need to improve Fire IT meeting reporting back to RN membership Advocate for RN funding opportunities Visiting scientist program ? Proposal opportunities Can JRC/GEO GWIS strengthen regional fire activities ? GWIS evaluation exercise
