Motivation to build ECAL HADES START - measurements of the respective p0 and η meson two g decay yields together with the dielectron data for the knowledge of dielectron coctail and normalization at incident heavy ion energies 2-8 AGeV - g measurements from specific strangeness production channels: L(1405) decay, K0 → π0 + π0 reconstruction - better electron/pion suppression for large momenta (p>400 MeV/c) as compared to the present situation EMC CERN CERES-TAPS 1993 Eur. ECAL for HADES – Status 2016 FAIR-CZ in-kind contribution: Purpose and Concept Based on lead-glass modules combined with Hamamatsu 3" PMTs Significant improvement in electron-to-pion suppression Enables photon measurements Will be installed in HADES cave at SIS18 STATUS TDR approved Participating institutes: TU Darmstadt, U Krakow, INR/RAS Moscow, INP/CAS Rez, TU Munich, IP Bratislava, MEPhi Moscow and GSI Preparation of the mechanical infrastructure in progress – Polish in-kind contract signed Commissioning planned for Q1-Q2/2018 Expected performance: ΔE/E = 5 % at 1.0 GeV (photons) Total cost: 1.70 M€ – (0.847 M€ available, 0.222 M€ EoI, 0.635 M€ to be assigned) FAIR-CZ in-kind contribution: HV power supply for 4 sectors (crate, HV cards, cables, Radiall connectors) 200 pieces of HV dividers for ECAL Optical monitoring system for 5 sectors 120 pieces of 3“ Hamamatsu PMTs material for magnetic shielding etc. In total 11M CZK, i.e. 415 k€ Pavel 15 2016 2017 18 Mainframe Module assembly Sector assembly DAQ Installation

Modules assembly - Status Dec. 2016 modules with 3” PMT’s - 117 pieces of 3“ modules assembled - 85 tested with cosmic muons and LED light – A. Reshetin, A. Shabanov, O. Svoboda - new PMTs ordered, to be continued in 2017 modules with 1.5” PMT - 150 modules assembled, mag. shielding and opt. fibres will be added in Mar./2017  2 sectors (2 x 163 modules) to be finished soon, will continue with new PMT delivery Nov. 2016,new GSI detector lab.

Optical monitoring system One sector full system developed and tested: manufactured SQS Nová Paka (CZ) 450nm laser (IIIB), 80mW microlens array and optics 196 fibers for blue light light yield in fibres same within 22% HV supply 384 channels per crate output voltage range is 0 ÷ 3.5 kV, with 3 mA price 230 EUR/channel + 25 EUR/channel for HV connectors and cables production of cables, slow control system, … Crate SY 1527LC Mod. Measurement of magnetic shielding magnetic shielding made from two layers of 0.1 mm Mu metal foil from Aaronia.de micro welded diameter 8cm, length 15.5 cm Painted with black color (outer and inner surface) to absorb light used for 3“ PMT from Hamamatsu (R6091) – covers whole PMT will be operated in magnetic field of 3 – 5 Gauss max homogenous magnetic field from dipole magnet SP-46 magnetic field oriented upright to longitudinal axis of PMT field strength changed by precise power supply (∼1V / 250 mA) magnetic field measured with DTM-151 Digital Teslameter shielding mounted in ECAL module (lead glass 420x92x92mm, readout by R6091 PMT operated at -1600 V) short light pulses send via optical fiber to the glass – output amplitude from PMT set to -3V at 0 Gauss measurement done at two PMT orientations with respect to the magnetic field without shielding fast decrease in output amplitude (for more than 1 Gauss) with shielding slow decrease in amplitude starting from ∼5 Gauss PMT more sensitive to the magnetic field when dynodes oriented parallel to the field lines (upright to electron path) for smaller diameter and length of the shielding (1.5“ PMT – 4x10.5cm) one layer is enough to get the same performance P. FAIR-CZ-OP grant Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research - participation of the Czech Republic – OP - EU grant to cover part of needed ECAL investments - Allocated budget for investments 415 k€ - Will be used to buy: - HV power supply for 4 sectors (crate, HV cards, cables, Radial connectors) - 200 pieces of HV dividers for ECAL - optical monitoring system for 5 sectors - about 120 pieces of 3“ Hamamatsu PMTs - material for magnetic shielding, production of 3“ mechanics, HV connection boxes, … Submitted within closed call, already passed formal check and is currently being evaluated by experts.
