Roman Numerals The numbers are written in numerals, You can find numbers like this in inscriptions on buildings, faces of some clocks and in book outlines. Ancient Romans wrote numerals that did not use place value.

What are the symbols used in the Roman Numeration System? There are seven symbols used in this system. I V X L C D M

Each symbol has a corresponding value. Roman Numerals I V X L C D M Value 1 5 10 50 100 500 1000

Principles used in Roman Numeration System: Let’s consider this example 1) VII Where V = 5 I = 1 I = 1 So, 5+1+1 = 7 In this example the principle of addition is used. It means I and V written right side to the symbol of bigger numbers. Its value is added to the value of the bigger number.

Principles used in Roman Numeration System: Let’s consider this example 2) IV Where I = 1 V = 5 So, 5-1 = 4 In this example the principle of Subtraction is used. I is written on the ieft of v or x,then its value is subtracted from the value of V or X.I is not written more than once before V or X.
