Single Electricity Market (1) Systems Margin Price or SMP (pool price) is set each half hour by the marginal plant according to its place in the order of merit SMP prices are driven by fuel cost and plant availability The majority of Ireland’s generation fleet is based on gas fired plant – approx. 60% The next slide tracks SMP price and the movement of gas (Heren Day Ahead from January 2011 to date)

Single Electricity Market (3) Between January 2011 and December 13 the SMP mirrored the price of gas (as gas fired plants were generally the marginal plant setting the system price) However the rapid decline in the gas price since January 14 resulted a break between SMP and gas fired plant (SMP set by other fuels) This trend is dependent upon gas prices remaining low
Single Electricity Market (4) Gas fired plant no longer setting the SMP due to the steady and rapid decrease in the gas price
