Europeans Colonize Southeast Asia 1500s-1700s Europeans used lands in Asia- specifically India and China 1800s- Dutch, British, and French rivaled over lands in Southeast Asia

Dutch East Indies Dutch began a Dutch East India Company in 1600s Dutch wanted profits Crops: coffee, indigo, spices

Britain in Southeast Asia Britain took Burma in 1886 Prior to being taken over, Burma suffered several wars Britain also took Malaya- a trading port

French in Southeast Asia French sent Christians missionaries to Vietnam Vietnam tried to suppress Christianity French took over Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia Lands became known as French Indochina

United States and the Philippines 1500s- Spain seized the Philippines Spain sent Christian missionaries Spanish-American War- war between Spain and America War happened over Cuba’s attempt to win independence from Spain American battleships destroyed Spanish fleet America had to give Spain $20 million for the Philippines
