Volume 21 July 2018 Today we are going to be looking at area and volume and how we measure the irregular objects Starter: Calculate the area or volume of the following shapes: 1. 4. 5 cm 2.5 m 5 cm 2.5 m 5 cm 2. 5. 6 cm 10 mm 12 cm 5 mm 25 mm 3. 6. 10 mm d = 2 m 10 m

Volume 21 July 2018 Today we are going to be looking at area and volume and how we measure the irregular objects By the end of the lesson we will have been successful when we have: Estimate the area of irregular shapes Calculated the volumes of different irregularly shaped objects and recorded your results correctly

Volume 21 July 2018 Volume is the three dimensional space that an object occupies. Volume is measured in mm3, cm3 and m3. What does a m3 look like? Estimate how many Year 7 pupils can fit into 1 m3

Volume 21 July 2018 1cm3 = 1ml 1000 cm3 = 1000 ml = 1 litre or 10dm3 (a dm is 10cm)

Volume 21 July 2018 We can use a measuring cylinder or eureka can to measure the volume of irregular objects. We need to read the volume at the start (from the bottom of the meniscus) and the volume at the end (from the bottom of the meniscus)

Volume 21 July 2018 Measuring the volume of irregular objects Write bullet points to say what you are doing Draw the diagram Copy the table and fill in the gaps Object Volume at start cm3 Volume at end Volume of object cm3

Volume of water + object / cm3 Volume 21 July 2018 Results Table Name Volume of water / cm3 Volume of water + object / cm3 Volume of object / cm3

Volume 21 July 2018 Conclusion As the object is lowered into the water, it pushes water out of the way. The volume of the object is the same as the volume of water it displaces. The largest volume I measured was……The smallest volume I measured was……

Volume 21 July 2018 Now we are going to use a measuring cylinder and a displacement can. First the can is filled until it is full to the spout (so if anymore water is added it overflows down the spout) Check the measuring cylinder is empty Then add the object and collect the volume of the water which his equal to the volume of the object. Finished? Try the question sheet Volume Calculations I
