Tuesday, April 1, 2014 Aim: How do we find the volume of solids? Do Now: 1) A rectangular prism is 6 cm long, 2 cm wide, and 9 cm high. Find the surface area of the prism.

Essential Question: What does the volume of a solid measure? The volume of a solid is a measure of how much it will hold. The standard measures of volume are cubic units. Ex: cubic centimeters = cm³ Ex: cubic feet = ft³ Ex: cubic inches = in³

Today’s Solids: Rectangular Prism & Cube What are examples in everyday life of rectangular prisms and cubes? _____________________

Today’s Solid: Cylinder What are examples of cylinders in everyday life? _______________

Topic: Find the volume(v) of solid shapes Formulas: Cube: V = s3 or V = s × s × s (s means side) Rectangular prism: V = l × w × h (length × width × height) Cylinder: V = πr2h (π × radius2 × height)

Example – Together! Example 1) Find the volume, in cubic centimeters, of the rectangular prism shown.

Together! – Example: Find the volume of the cube below.

Together! –Example! A cylindrical container has a diameter of 12 inches and a height of 15 inches, as illustrated in the diagram. What is the volume of this container to the nearest tenth of a cubic inch?

A cardboard box has length x − 2, width x + 1, and height 2x. Together! A cardboard box has length x − 2, width x + 1, and height 2x. Write an expression, in terms of x, to represent the volume of the box.   b) If x = 8 centimeters, what is the number of cubic centimeters in the volume of the box?

YOU TRY! A block of wood is 5 inches long, 2 inches wide, and 3 inches high. What is the volume of this block of wood?

Practice time!

Closure -What is the formula for finding the volume of a rectangular prism/cube? ___________ -The volume of a solid is a measure of how much it will_________. -The standard measures of volume are _______ units. -What is the formula for finding the surface area of a cylinder? ________ -Surface area can be described as….?

Challenge. A company manufactures large dice for children's games Challenge! A company manufactures large dice for children's games. The dice are cubes with one side measuring 1.2 inch in length. The dice are formed when a liquid plastic in is poured into a mold of the die. The company uses trays that contain one dozen die molds in each tray. If the liquid plastic is measured in cubic inches, how much liquid plastic is needed to fill one tray? (Round answer to the nearest tenth of a cubic inch)
