Aim: How do plants respond to changes in the environment?
PATTERNS OF GROWTH. 3 PATTERNS  PLANTS ARE PLACED INTO 3 GROUPS ACCORDING TO HOW LONG IT TAKES THEM TO PRODUCE FLOWERS  ANNUALS  BIENNIALS  PERENNIALS.
Introduction When someone touches you, you turn and look. When you hear a loud noise, you may jump. These are known as STIMULUS and RESPONSE. Something.

Tropisms. Plants cannot move from place to place. Usually they are held in position firmly by their roots. They can, however, orientate their stems and.
Plant Tropisms. TROPISM is a biological phenomenon, indicating growth or turning movement of a plant in response to an environmental stimulus.

Plant Tropisms A plant’s response to a stimulus is called a tropism. 1. Phototropism 2. Gravitropism 3. Nastic response

The growth of a plant towards light is called phototropism The growth of a plant towards light is called phototropism. It maximizes light absorption for photosynthesis.

Plants don’t have muscles for movement so they have different cells grow at different rates. Ex) When the cells on one side grow more elongated than the cells on the other side, the stem curves.

To grow towards the light, cells on the side opposite of the light must be elongated.

Auxin: a chemical produced in plant tips that stimulates growth. To which side does active transport move the auxin to create the bend? The shaded side.

Gravitropism is a plant’s growth response to the force of gravity.

stems show negative tropism (against gravity) roots show positive tropism (down with gravity).

Nastic response: plant’s reaction to touch. Ex) Venus flytrap.
