Lewis and Clark Exploration

The Corps of Discovery The Lewis and Clark expedition began in 1803. Jefferson purchased all of the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon of France.

Purpose of Expedition The purpose of the expedition was to explore the new territory.

Challenges of the Expedition Travel through uncharted territory No ability to receive new supplies Transportation was difficult Insects, fear of hostile attacks.

Consequences/Results To explore the Missouri River, to improve course & communication for the purposes of commerce. Learn more about the Northwest's natural resources, inhabitants, and possibilities for settlement. One of the most significant contributions was a better perception of the geography of the Northwest and the first accurate maps of the area. 

C/R Cont. One important result of the expedition was that it enabled the U. S. to lay claim to the Oregon region. Pioneer movement that settled the West in the mid-1800's. Another result  was a better understanding of the country's natural resources. And it established friendly relations with some of the Native American tribes.

Important people Jefferson asked Lewis to lead and the Corps of Discovery, scientist on the journey, keeping detailed records of the plants and animals they found. Clark was the geographer on the trip, keeping a detailed diary of drawings and maps. Sacagawea served as an interpreter on the journey.
