What can I expect from other people? Speaking for Myself Why am I important? Who should speak for me? What can I expect from other people?

Speaking for Myself What is communication? Communication is the word we use to talk about how we send messages or bits of information between one another. Is all communication good? Some communication is better than others. Most of the time, good communication occurs when everyone agrees to respect and acknowledge the rights of oneself and others. Discussion the questions: Why am I important? Why are other people important? Who should speak for me?

Speaking for Myself You are important. What makes you important? Can you expect others to always communicate with you in a way that respects you? Why or why not?

Speaking for Myself Why are others important? What happens when we don’t respect the rights of others? What happen when we do respect the rights of others?

Speaking for Myself There are different attitudes about communication. You will learn about three main types: Passive or Passive-Aggressive Communication Aggressive Communication Assertive Communication

Speaking for Myself There are different attitudes about communication. You will learn about three main types: Passive or Passive-Aggressive Communication Aggressive Communication Assertive Communication Passive or Passive Aggressive Communication What does the word passive mean? A story: You let a friend borrow your pen to sign a birthday card. Your friend begins talking to someone else, puts your pen in his/her pocket, and walks off without even saying thank you. A story: You let a friend borrow your pen to sign a birthday card. Your friend begins talking to someone else, puts your pen in his/her pocket, and walks off without even saying thank you. A Question: How would you communicate with your friend by assertive communication?

Speaking for Myself Assertive communication is considered the best choice in most situations. Why? It helps us overcome our worries or fears. It helps us achieve our goals. It helps us to be in charge of our own choices. It helps protect us from being mistreated by others. We like ourselves more when we use assertive forms of communication.

Speaking for Myself Thinking about Assertive Communication: Put yourself in the other’s shoes. Try to stay calm and listen to what is being said. Practice being assertive. Make it a habit. Don’t forget that you can say “no”. Respect the rights and boundaries of others.

Speaking for Myself Another story: You overhear someone talking about you. You do not know what they said but you did not like their tone of voice. You feel angry and worried that something bad is being said about you. What do you do?

Speaking for Myself Another story: Your boss calls you into her office and tells you that money has gone missing from another employee’s purse. She tells you that someone saw you take the money. You know that you did not do it. How do you respond?

Speaking for Myself Another story: A friend was suppose to meet you at the mall in front of the pizza place at a certain time. You were to eat pizza together and then see a movie. You were very hungry and decide to eat your food before your friend arrives. When your friend shows up, he seems disappointed that you did not wait for him. What do you do?

Speaking for Myself Another story: You have been working the night shift at a new job and end up coming home in the early morning hours between 2 or 3 o’clock. A neighbor complains to you and to your landlord about how the sound of you coming home wakes him up every morning. How do you handle this?
