Medieval Castles

Introduction A medieval castle is a large and beautiful stone building that kings and queens lived in and they wanted to protect its people from attack. There are lots of castles around Scotland. Some you can find really close to where we live.

The Design The castles are usually made out of strong materials such as stone because this helps to stay safe. Castles have not many windows and doors to stop anyone sneaking in. Castles are also built to last which is why many are still standing today like Edinburgh Castle.

The Location The castle is usually built on top of a hill or near a river. This makes it difficult for enemies to attack the castle without being seen. Most castles in the world today are found in the UK or nearby.

Edinburgh Castle Edinburgh Castle is built on top of a 700 million year old volcano. It was built in the 12th century. It is the most important castle In Scotland. It has been at the middle of lots of Scottish wars. Today lots of people on holiday go there.

Dumbarton Castle This castle has the longest history in the whole of Scotland. Dumbarton castle overlooks the River Clyde. It has 500 steps to reach the very top. It also sits on an old volcanic rock. Mary Queen of Scots lived here.
