Disciples Remember Jesus

Deuteronomy 6: 6-9 “6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

A phylactery contains scriptures from Exodus and Leviticus and is worn at morning prayer, as a reminder to keep the law. “Bind them on your foreheads”.

When should we remember Jesus? When we get up and go to bed When life’s eventualities happen When we make decisions When we encounter people When we are tempted to sin.

What should we remember about Jesus? We are loved  ”For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3v16) He is almighty “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1v8)

What should we remember about Jesus? We are forgiven   ”In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us.” (Ephesians 1v7) He is victorious “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross” (Colossians 2v15)

What should we remember about Jesus? We have a history of God’s goodness, faithfulness and provision  ”For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;     his faithfulness continues through all generations.” (Psalm 100 v 5) He is the creator and sustainer “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word” (Hebrews 1v3)

What should we remember about Jesus? We are chosen  ”But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” (1 Peter 2 v 9) He reigns in glory “That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.” (Ephesians 1v19-21)

What should we remember about Jesus? We have promises over our lives  ”Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. (2 Peter 1v4) He is Holy “ Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”” (Revelation 4v8)

What should we remember about Jesus? We have hope  ”May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15v13) He will come again “ Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” (Acts 1 v11)

What should we remember about Jesus? We have the Holy Spirit living in us  ”  Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2v38) The cross towers over it all “And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,”(Philippians 2 8-9)  

Choices The love of God “nice to have or a need to know?” Remembering Jesus “nice to know or a need to do?” Discipleship has the same core word has “discipline” (“systematic training”) Discipline underpinned by the fierce love of God. Choices matter (concept or reality?)

Communion The old testament looked forward to a new covenant Jesus instituted this covenant on the cross We are specifically remembering the cross. FF Bruce: “In the Biblical sense “remembrance” is more than a mental exercise. It involves a realisation of what is remembered”.
