Requirements for a media Production/industry practice By Lucy Wheatley

Product and Platforms The type of product I will be creating is a website based upon a business that contributes to Brighton being a ‘digital hub’. A website is typically described as an assortment of web pages that are all linked and can be accessed by visiting a home page using a browser. Usually a website will include a variety of multimedia content, such as text, imagery and video. I will be including multimedia content in my own website.

Budget It is important to consider my budget as by making financial arrangements it will allow me to create a spending plan for my money, it guarantees that I will always have enough money for the equipment I need. I need to consider what budgets will be required, specifically the different sources of finance: Equipment- I will need a digital camera in order to photograph the studio and crew. I will also need a camera in order to video the goings on in the workplace. In addition, I require a pen and paper in order to write down the responses from the staff when interviewing them. Talent- Talent will be the staff who will be featured on the website, whether it be through imagery or by being included in the video. Transport- I will need to travel to the studio via car, so I need to consider the price of petrol within my budget. Facility hire- Fortunately I work for the company that I am basing my website upon therefore I wont need to pay to hire the studio. However, I will still need to get permission from my management to allow me to showcase their studio online.

Timescales Scheduling is very important when there are numerous tasks to complete within a set period of time. Scheduling will allow me to be more productive as I will know what needs to be done by a certain time, this is also known as a deadline, which is described as the latest time or date in which something should be completed. When creating my website their will be a variety of timescales that I need to consider. Getting the equipment required- It is important to get the camera equipment available at the time I want to use it because if I don’t have the equipment when desired, I will be behind on the timescale set. Recording/gathering the content- It is crucial to have a plan of action and timescale for recording and gathering the content needed for my website. I need to consider, how and when I will be doing this, and think through the length of time it will take. Putting the content together- Once I have all the content needed for the website, I will then need to consider the timescale of how long it will take to design and put together the website.

Personnel/Contributors There are a small number of people that will be involved in my website. They will all contribute roles that will help towards my website. Cast/Models- The cast will be the staff and management at Imago Photographic, they will be involved in interviews for the website as well as be featured in a video of the work life in the studio. I have chosen the staff of Imago because they are the heart of the business, and this is primarily what my website is based upon. Crew- Crew will be myself, I will be interviewing the cast as well as photographing and filming the content. I am taking on this role as this is my own project and so I want to have involvement from me and only me.

Facilities I will only require a minimal amount of production equipment and software to create my website. Production equipment: Camera- I will need a camera to capture imagery of the staff and studio as well as take a video recording of the studio. Tripod- When photographing and recording I may need a tripod, as this helps to support the camera and provide better clearer recording. Lighting- To get the best imagery possible I will need lighting, which will include lightboxes. This will be provided from the studio. Software: Photoshop- I will need to use Photoshop to enhance my images for the website. All the facilities used will be in house.

Content Original materials- Original material is content made by myself, it has not been copied from the internet or other sources. Some of the original material I will be producing will include photographs, video content and written information. I will source these materials for my project by generating these resources by myself. Archive and library materials- These are materials you can get from a library or other resources like the internet. I will be using some imagery that belongs to Imago Photographic to showcase some of their work. I will source the images by asking permission form Imago’s management to use the photographs desired. Interviews- An interview is an official meeting between two people, where questions are asked by the interviewer to gain information, qualities, attitudes, requests from the interviewee. I will source this by creating and asking the questions myself and undertaking the interview also.

Contributors I will have assistance from specialists and experts in order to complete my website. These are people who have been taught in what they specialise in. Therefore, they will know a great deal about the particular subject. Video- I will ask for assistance from my assessor Shane. He has expert knowledge in film. He will be able to provide me with important information about how to produce a video, including angles, lighting and how to edit the video material. Photography- In terms of attaining good photography for the website I will ask for assistance from my manger Damon who specialises in photography. I myself know a lot about this subject but he will help me to get the best imagery possible, this will include what camera to use, lighting and set up arrangements. Creating the website- Once I have all the material needed for my website my teacher Helen will help me to create the website. She will give me guidance on what software to use and how to put the content into a suitable format. Fortunately I will only be filming and shooting within the Imago Photographic studio. However, if I was to be filming or shooting in public I would have to get permission from the appropriate local authority or council. They are accountable for public land, public buildings, roads and parking.

Locations I will only be in one location to obtain the material I need and that will be at the Imago Photographic studio. This means I wont have to get permission from the local authority or council as it wont be in a public place, instead I will just need to get permission from the staff to take photos and video content of them. Codes of Practice and Regulation When creating my website I will need to consider the different codes of practice and regulations, there's different clearances for content as well as regulatory bodies to ensure my work complies with the codes of practice. The Mechanical Copyright Protection Society- MCPS represents its members’ mechanical rights and collects royalties for the use of songs in records and other physical carriers of music. Creative Commons- provides free, easy-to-use copyright licenses to make a simple and consistent way to give the public authorisation to share and use your creative work–on conditions of your choice. Clearances from people used in my project- When involving people in my project I need to get permission from them in order for me to put the content up which includes their identity, this is done through written consent. British Interactive Media Association- With hundreds of organisations and individual members from all sectors of the market, BIMA provides a valuable way to keep up with developments in a fast-moving sector. Ofcom- Ofcom is the communications regulator in the UK. They control the TV, radio and video-on-demand sectors, fixed-line telecoms, mobiles and postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate. British Institute of Professional Photography- BIPP help represent professional photography to government and industry.

Health and Safety It is important in the pre-production stage to have pre-production documentation. This includes a risk assessment, which is relevant to health and safety issues. A risk assessment details things that could go wrong, and outlines all the possible hazards that could happen during the production. You should also have a contingency plan. This links to the risk assessment and showcases what your alternative plan is if some of the things that could go wrong do.

Equality/Diversity In the UK, all companies and projects are legally required to follow to certain practices that ensure discrimination is eliminated and expectations of equality are always met in the workplace. All workers must be treated equally and be given the same set of opportunities regardless of their race, age, gender, sexuality, disability, culture or anything else that might be discriminated against. The legislations in place are in existence to ensure that an inclusive working environment is always fostered, and that any form of ‘difference’ should never prove to be an obstacle.
