Delving further into the use of the electronic board to support mathematical learning

Aims This workshop aims to enable delegates to: consider how using IWB software can support children’s mathematical learning engage with activities to develop greater confidence in using IWB software to create resources that support the teaching and learning of mathematics Delving further into the use of the electronic board to support mathematical learning

Key techniques Builds on basic techniques Methods of input Creating Drawing, copy/paste, clone Manipulating Grouping, layering, properties (fades and fills) Tools Shades and reveals Mathematics specific (protractor etc.) Camera tools (screen shots and recorder) Galleries and resources (where is all my stuff?) Delving further into the use of the electronic board to support mathematical learning

Key issues Know the maths What are you going to use the digital technologies for? Facilitate engagement and motivation? How does this make the learning interactive? Generate resources that support learning Model the mathematical processes and ideas Facilitate visualisation Support the development of mathematical models and images Promote mathematical discussion Providing space for children to develop mathematical reasoning Providing explanation and illustrating thinking Support assessment of mathematical learning Support parents/ pupils/ students Support your teaching In pairs or on own think of an area of maths where IWB can be used to support learning & create them Me model possibly Delving further into the use of the electronic board to support mathematical learning

Material This material was used in one of the series of CPD workshops that formed the four day course ‘Leading and supporting the development of digital technologies in mathematics’. This course, delivered in two sets of two-day sessions, was funded by the NCETM and written and tutored by members of the Association of Mathematics Education Teachers (AMET) and National Association of Mathematics Advisors (NAMA). Over 50 people followed the course with representatives from the ITE sector, Local Authorities and teachers from schools (primary, secondary and further education). In pairs or on own think of an area of maths where IWB can be used to support learning & create them Me model possibly Delving further into the use of the electronic board to support mathematical learning

Modelling the mathematical processes & ideas Harries, A. and Barmby, P. W. (2007) ’Representing and understanding multiplication.’, Research in mathematics education., 9 (1). pp. 33-46. Barmby et al (2009) “The array representation and primary children’s understanding and reasoning in multiplication” in Educational Studies in Mathematics (2009) 70:217–241 Considering the ‘array’ as a useful image that represents the characteristics of multiplication Replication The binary nature of multiplication and the notion of two distinct and different inputs (number of sets and how many in each set) Commutativity Distributivity Delving further into the use of the electronic board to support mathematical learning
