Past Perfect (Frame of time reference) Before Past Filling in time gap

Past Perfect Deals with time and sequences of activities or events Ex) I never realized that she had won the grand prize in the international music contest. Used to provide explanations or background ( main clause-past; subordinate clause-p.p.) Ex) My friend came by last night because I had told him to help me with the homework

Past Perfect Special emphasis to highlight the timing of events. Ex) Ancient woodland once covered Britain, but 1100AD most of it had been cleared to make farmland. Never use P.P. with present(perfect)!!!
