New Hiring Process Assigning meaningful new roles to principals and faculty senates in filling classroom teacher jobs

New selection factor #10 In the case of a classroom teaching position, the recommendation of the principal of the school at which the applicant will be performing a majority of his or her duties

Principal’s Recommendation The principal has the opportunity (but no duty) to interview all qualified applicants and make a recommendation “Based on a determination of which of the applicants is the highest qualified for the position” Must consider factors 1-9 in making recommendation [Policy 5000] No requirement to assign any amount of weight to any factor

The faculty senate’s new role under the 11th factor

New selection factor #11 In the case of a classroom teaching position, the recommendation, if any, resulting from the process established by the faculty senate of the school at which the employee will be performing a majority of his or her duties

Under Policy 5000, a faculty senate that wishes to make recommendations must vote to adopt one of four processes

The allowable processes Hiring committee of 3 elected members Hiring committee of 7-11 members Single designee with discretion to involve up to 2 more Single designee who shall designate up to 2 more

A faculty senate may vote to change processes At the end of any semester, for the next semester and/or For the summer break

The 3 Agree Filling certain vacancies by agreement of the Superintendent, principal and faculty senate
