What are lunar eclipses? Shadows are…  When you walk outside on a sunny day, you can see your shadow.  A shadow is formed when an object blocks a light.

Solar and Lunar Eclipses
Eclipses When the moon’s shadow hits Earth or Earth’s shadow hits the moon, an eclipse occurs. There are 2 types of eclipses: solar (sun) eclipse & lunar.
 When the moon’s shadow hits the Earth or when the Earth’s shadow hits the moon an eclipse occurs.
Eclipses Solar and Lunar. What is a solar eclipse The moon passes in a direct line between the Sun and the Earth The moon’s shadow blocks out the sun.
Eclipses What is the length of time from a new moon to the next new moon? 29.5 Earth days Moon rotates and revolves around the Earth every 27.3 days.
Eclipses What is an eclipse? The total or partial obscuring of one celestial body by another. Eclipses occur when the moon’s orbit which is tilted becomes.

Presentation transcript:

What Causes Eclipses? Earth and Moon cast shadows. When either passes through the other’s shadow, we have an eclipse. Because the Sun is an extended bright object, there are two different regions of the shadow: Penumbra: partly illuminated. Umbra: completely dark Credit: Lunar and Planetary Institute

Lunar eclipses Lunar eclipses happens when the Moon passes through the shadow of the Earth Lunar eclipses can be partial, penumbral, or total. Lunar eclipses can occur only at full moon. Use the interactive figure to show the conditions for the 3 types of lunar eclipse. Credit: Lunar and Planetary Institute

When the Earth’s shadow covers the Moon, we have a lunar eclipse http://www.mreclipse.com/Special/LEprimer.html Additional details are at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_eclipse When the Earth’s shadow covers the Moon, we have a lunar eclipse

Earth’s Umbra has a reddish color Solid Earth blocks direct sunlight. Earth’s atmosphere bends light. Earth’s atmosphere scatters blue light. Only red light fills the umbra.
