THE REPUBLIC OF SUDAN COUNTRY POLICIES AND PROGRAMS Dr.Naiema Abdalla Wagialla NCDs / FMOH

THE REPUBLIC OF SUDAN Area = 1 THE REPUBLIC OF SUDAN Area = 1.8 million km² Population = 33 million Health system in Sudan is of Federal, state (18 states) and local governments. Health care delivered through primary secondary and tertiary Levels.

NCDs SITUATION hypertension (24.3%), DM (14.5%), asthma (9.2%), and cancers (0.8%) risk factors: Smoking 29.1% snuff 25.9% physically inactivity 87% overweight or obese 41.5% of male and 62.5% of female were, serum cholesterol was 19.7%

NCDs prevention Organization : ministry of education ,ministry of youth and sport ,school health ,health promotion (physical in activity, tobacco control ) Minimum resources (human , money ) In the PHC facilities (integration ): risky group

MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS NCD national strategy and plan were developed NCDs Guidelines, protocols ,flow chart and training manuals were developed NCDs IEC materials were developed Feasibility study (PEN) for integration of NCDs at PHCs -2 States ,expansion was implemented in N&S Darfur (sensitization , training ,equipping ,materials, renovation ,M&E, raise public awareness)

INTERESTING CHALLENGES political commitment to NCDS still a huge challenge -competing priorities (double burden) expansion of integration of NCDs package in all state Universal health insurance coverage (only 36% ) Establishment of functioning NCDs surveillance system. in Sudan 60% of PHC facilities are run by medical assistants Engagement of other sector in NCDs prevention plan Skewing of resources for curative aspect

MAIN LESSONS LEARNT OVER THE LAST 5 YRS In last house hold survey, NCD prevalence indicators were not generated, and NCDs risk factors were not included, hope in the coming survey (2014), all should be covered In all NCDs surveys(SHHS & Stepwise survey) , children and adolescents were not involved, this time we request to include both of them

The way forward 500 health centers in all States were planed for expansion -integration of NCDs at PHC /5years - to cover remote arias To strengthen the HIS, NCD Surveillance system, research implementation and NCDs & RFs step wise survey National multisectoral plan will cover 5 out the 9 global strategic plan targets on 2014 – 2015. We plan to make NCD services more responsive to empower the users of the health care system and making providers more accountable and satisfied

Thank you
