Presentation transcript:

Do we have one ocean or several oceans?

Once water leaves the e______, it heads out to the ocean.

Once water leaves the estuary, it heads out to the ocean.

Oceans make up about __% of our Earth surface.

Oceans make up about 70% of our Earth surface.

Are all oceans our connected?

All oceans are connected! HOW?

OCEAN WATER PROPERTIES LAB

Write these ANALYSIS QUESTIONS: The more salt dissolves in water, the ________ dense this ocean water is. The colder liquid water gets, the __________ dense the liquid ocean gets. Until it freezes to ice, then it gets __________ dense. Two (2) ways to change the density (m/v) of ocean water are: _____________ & _______________ What moves surface currents: __________________ What moves deep water currents: changes in water _______________

Now draw a line under these questions, we’ll get back to these later.

Lab part 1: SALINITY & DENSITY. Fill cup 2/3rds full of tap water

Which has more density (mass/volume) carrots or potatoes?

Which has more density (MASS/volume) carrots or potatoes? You could weigh us all…

Which has more density (MASS/VOLUME) carrots or potatoes? You could weigh us all… …but we are all different sizes!

Which has more density (mass/volume) carrots or potatoes? Place your carrot in cup.

Which has more density (mass/volume) carrots or potatoes? Place your carrot in cup. Carefully add ONE FLAT teaspoon of salt to your cup of water.

Which has more density (mass/volume) carrots or potatoes? Place your carrot in cup. Carefully add 1 FLAT teaspoon of salt to your cup of water. Stir gently until salt is dissolved.

Which has more density (mass/volume) carrots or potatoes? Place your carrot in cup. Carefully add 1 FLAT teaspoon of salt to your cup of water. Stir gently until salt is dissolved. Repeat another FLAT teaspoon one-at-a-time, stirring until the carrot floats. _________ tspns of NaCl salt to make CARROT float.

RECORD!

Rinse out cup and refill with 2/3rds fresh water. 1 person per group!

Repeat the same steps you did with the carrot, but with a POTATO. Place your potato in cup. Carefully add 1 FLAT teaspoon of salt to your cup of water. Stir gently until salt is dissolved. Repeat 1 FLAT teaspoon at-a-time, stirring until the potato floats. _________ tspns of NaCl salt to make POTATO float.

Did the carrot or the potato need more salt to float?

So, which do YOU think has more density (mass/volume)… CARROTS or POTATOES?

So, which do YOU think has more density (mass/volume)… CARROTS or POTATOES?

POTATOES have greater density than carrots. So, which do YOU think has more density (mass/volume)… CARROTS or POTATOES? POTATOES have greater density than carrots.

How did you figure a potato is more dense than a carrot?

Salt (NaCl) gets in between water molecules adding more mass in the same volume...the more salt means more salty water can lift denser stuff!

What’s happening to the density of the water as you add more salt? SALT WATER has MORE DENSITY than FRESH WATER!

As salinity increases, water gets ________ dense.

More mass in the same volume.

As salinity increases, water gets more dense.

Clean-up part 1 Get back into seats and focus front. Rinse out and clean your cups. Dry off carrots and potatoes return to Mr. G. Get back into seats and focus front.

Part 2: Temperature & density

Ice sure is weird, Mort.

How do you figure, Norm?

Ice is water as a solid, isn’t it?

2/3rds of all freshwater, yep.

Aren’t solids supposed to have the most compact atoms & molecules?

My feet are cold.

Everyone’s feet are cold, Larry. So what’s your point, Norm?

When something gets more compact, it gets more dense.

Your point?

Solid water floats over liquid water, dude.

Whoa.

I’m aquatic.

Solid H2O (ice) is ______ dense than liquid water

Solid H2O (ice) is LESS dense than liquid water Remember that water is a POLAR molecule (with a positive H side and negative O side)

Is cold liquid water more dense than warm liquid water? You should have rinsed out and cleaned your cups, carrots and potatoes, returned to seats, focused front & continued note-taking. After Mr. G sees you’re all done, raise your hand. With his approval, fill your cup with warm water at the front of class.

Is cold liquid water more dense than warm liquid water? With his approval, fill your cup with warm water at the front of class. Mr. G will give each group an ice cube with red dye. Place it atop your warm water. Observe.

Is cold liquid water more dense than warm liquid water? Where does the cool (red) water go as it melts from the solid ice? Does the cooler red water stay at the top of your cup or drop towards the bottom?

Is cold water more dense than warm water? While ice is _______ dense than liquid water, cold water is _______ dense than warm water.

Water density: While ICE is LESS DENSE than LIQUID WATER (ice FLOATS after all), COLD LIQUID water is MORE DENSE than WARM LIQUID water.

Water density: H2O(ice) < H2O(warm) < H2O(cool) While ICE is LESS DENSE than LIQUID WATER (ice FLOATS after all), COLD LIQUID water is MORE DENSE than WARM LIQUID water. H2O(ice) < H2O(warm) < H2O(cool)

Clean-up. Return tubs

What connects all our oceans?

Surface & deep water currents. Surface & deep currents move all Earth’s salt water around
